Hemp Seed

Hemp, derived from the Cannabis sativa plant, is used in skincare as a seed oil or extract, prized for its nourishing, anti-inflammatory, and balancing properties, thanks to its rich fatty acids and antioxidants, without psychoactive effects.
DESCRIPTION
Hemp comes from Cannabis sativa, an annual plant native to Central Asia, now cultivated globally, including North America and Europe, for its non-psychoactive seeds and fibers (distinct from marijuana due to its low THC content, under 0.3%). In skincare, it’s primarily used as hemp seed oil, cold-pressed from the plant’s seeds, or as an extract from seeds or leaves, yielding a greenish oil or concentrate. The oil is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (linoleic acid ~55%, alpha-linolenic acid ~20%), vitamin E, and minerals like magnesium, with extracts offering additional cannabinoids (e.g., CBD in trace amounts) and phenolic compounds. It appears in moisturizers, serums, balms, and cleansers, listed as "hemp seed oil," "Cannabis sativa seed oil," or "hemp extract." Its lightweight, nutty-scented texture absorbs well, making it ideal for all skin types, while its rise in popularity ties to natural beauty trends and hemp’s sustainability. Unlike CBD oil, hemp seed oil focuses on nutrition over cannabinoid effects.
BENEFITS
Hemp offers several skincare benefits:
Moisturizing: Omega fatty acids hydrate and soften skin, strengthening the skin barrier and relieving dryness without clogging pores, perfect for dry or rough skin.
Anti-Inflammatory: Polyunsaturated fats and trace cannabinoids reduce redness, irritation, and inflammation, soothing conditions like acne, eczema, or sensitivity.
Balancing: Regulates sebum production, controlling oiliness in acne-prone skin while nourishing dry areas, ideal for combination skin.
Antioxidant Protection: Vitamin E and phenolic compounds shield skin from free radicals, slowing environmental damage and aging signs like fine lines.
Skin Repair: Supports cell turnover and barrier repair, aiding in the recovery of irritation, minor blemishes, or environmental stress.
Note: Hemp seed oil is non-comedogenic and safe for most, with no psychoactive effects. Those with cannabis allergies should patch-test, though reactions are rare. It’s lightweight but may need richer oils for very dry skin.
